Sept. 3, 2005 Update "Sometimes I
feel like a motherless child, We are drawn together by the separations and unending tragedies in New Orleans, birthplace of the blues and jazz, and the Gulf area. While New Orleans' literal music is silenced, her soul-music of sorrow is felt by all. Her spirited lives are scattering throughout our nation. May we find our own jazz - improvisational - blues - community responses. May we tend grief and questions in ourselves and in our daily spheres. Relief efforts, concerts, and fund-raising are underway. Donations can be given to the American Red Cross, or countless other organizations. We don't have perfected "scores" or plans of what to do. May we hear these new blues calling us, pick up whatever "instruments" or talents we have and respond however we can. Write a check. Organize a local effort. Re-focus something you already do well. New Orleans' regional music has voiced our soul-depth emotions through many of our own life-celebrations and losses.
In our own communities and everyday spaces, may we play, sing, and experience her music anew.
